Tech Tips for Entrepreneurs: How to Stay Productive and Let ...

August 25, 2012

Page 1 Page 2

When you?re running a business, you and your team are often faced with the task of complete several projects simultaneously. This leads to increased multitasking in the workplace.

In general, there is an ongoing debate about the quality of work completed while multitasking. Women are often both praised and ridiculed for their ability to multitask. While it is not specifically a female trait, it does seem to be less common in men.

But one thing is clear.

Some tasks can be combined to improve efficiency.

Tech Inspired Productivity

In today?s technology driven world, our electronic devices multitask for us. Most smartphones come fully equipped with a calculator, calendar, and apps for any occasion. We can perform most business functions on a computer, which streamlines processes. What?s more, when technology multitasks for us, the quality of deliverables and productivity is not lost.

Here are four effective, tech-inspired ways to combine tasks to maximize productivity and efficiency.

1. Organization: Keep everything in one place.

You can lose a lot of time in a business just by looking for things.

Being organized will save you time. And interestingly enough, I?ve heard that if time could be measured in weight, you could save 2,000 lbs of time just by being organized. Isn?t that a load off your shoulders?

There are many ways to become organized. First, make sure all of the software you need to do business is on your computer or easily accessible in the cloud. Also ensure that all company computers have network access. Everything is now in one location, but can be accessed from any work computer. Once your team develops a habit of saving files to the network, they will be much easier to locate.

2. Find a software that does everything you need.

Today, small businesses can operate like multinational companies. This starts with improved access to enterprise level software that meets the unique needs of a small business.

There are numerous databases and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems that will keep track of various functions within your company: Accounts Payable, Sales Orders, Payroll, and Project Management. You can store all of that information in one easily searchable database. Also, open source ERP solutions on the market are scalable and effective for almost any business.

Customization is the key to efficiency. Tailor your office management solutions to your office.

Report: More foreign fighters join rebels in Syria

Free Syrian Army fighters take cover as they exchange fire with regime forces in the Salaheddin neighbourhood of Syria's northern city of Aleppo on Wednesday.

By NBC News and wire reports

More foreign fighters claiming allegiance to al-Qaida have reportedly joined rebels in war-torn Aleppo, deepening the regional implications of the conflict in Syria.

According to Zeina Khodr, a journalist with news channel Al Jazeera, "Arab fighters from Saudi Arabia and Egypt who didn't want to be filmed" were operating in the city. Some reportedly claimed allegiance to al-Qaida.

Earlier this month, NBC News chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel witnessed al-Qaida units crossing the border from Turkey into Syria, raising fears that militant Islamists could use the civil war to establish a power base?in the heart of the Middle East.?

The 16-month Syria crisis has widened in recent weeks, with deadly sectarian clashes spreading over the border into Lebanon's coastal city of Tripoli.

At least 13 people have died and more than a hundred have been wounded in fighting this week between Lebanese Sunni Muslims and Alawites, including one in the early hours of Thursday.

The bombardment killed at least 15 people and wounded 150 in Daraya, situated on the southwest edge of Damascus, the sources said.

Troops were conducting house to house raids in the conservative Sunni Muslim town and making their way to the town's centre, meeting light resistance from rebels who appear to have largely withdrawn from the area, activists in Damascus said.?

Activists release amateur video reportedly showing the shelling of Aleppo by Syrian government forces while Japan confirms a war correspondent, Maya Yamamoto, was killed by gunfire in Syria. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

"They are using mortar bombs to clear each sector then they enter it, while moving towards the centre," said Abu Zeid, one of the activists. He was speaking by phone from an area adjacent to Daraya.

Other activists said the army was also shelling parts of the suburb from Qasioun, which overlooks Damascus, and from Republican Guard barracks situated near a hilltop presidential palace.

Tim Marshall, a journalist with UK news channel Sky News, said he counted 32 explosions in the space of just one hour in the southern suburbs of?Damascus early on Thursday.

Britain on Wednesday echoed the warnings of President Barack Obama that the use or threat of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime would force them "to revisit their approach".

A spokesman for U..K Prime Minister David Cameron said the "appalling situation that continues in Syria" had been the main focus of a telephone conversation between Obama and Cameron, according to a BBC report.

Obama on Monday threatened "enormous consequences" if his Syrian counterpart used chemical or biological arms or even moved them in a menacing way.

The president used some of his strongest language yet to warn Assad not to use chemical or biological weapons ? after Syria acknowledged for the first time that it had such weapons and could use them if foreign countries attacked it.

Health and defense applications account for 40 percent of business R&D

Businesses in the United States are focusing a large portion of their research and development efforts on health and defense, according to a National Science Foundation (NSF) report released today.

Of the $290.7 billion in total R&D that was performed by businesses in the United States in 2008, 40 percent was applied to health and medical areas ($76.1 billion) and defense areas ($41.5 billion). More than 86 percent of the health or medical R&D performed by businesses was paid for by the reporting companies themselves. However, the federal government funded most of the defense R&D performed by companies.

R&D paid for by the companies themselves reflects company priorities and strategies. Two-thirds of the company-funded health or medical R&D was performed by companies in the pharmaceutical and medicine industry. And most of the company-funded R&D with defense applications was performed by companies in the computer and electronic products or aerospace industries.

The report also provides detail on energy, environmental protection and agricultural application areas. Data are from NSF's Business R&D and Innovation Survey.

How Science Can Improve Teaching

Image: Ross MacDonald

Most teachers would agree that it is important that students remember much of what they read. Yet one of the most common sights on high school and college campuses across the land is that of students poring over textbooks, yellow marker in hand, highlighting pertinent passages?which often end up including most of the page. Later in the semester, to prepare for their exams, students hit the textbooks again, rereading the yellow blocks of text.

Studies have shown that highlighting and rereading text is among the least effective ways for students to remember the content of what they have read. A far better technique is for students to quiz themselves. In one study, students who read a text once and then tried to recall it on three occasions scored 50 percent higher on exams than students who read the text and then reread it three times. And yet many teachers persist in encouraging?or at least not discouraging?the techniques that science has proved to fall short.

This is just one symptom of a general failure to integrate scientific knowledge of the mind into schooling. Many commonly held ideas about education defy scientific principles of thinking and learning. For example, a common misconception is that teaching content is less important than teaching critical thinking skills or problem-solving strategies. Scientists have also long known that kids must be explicitly taught the connections between letters and sounds and that they benefit most when such instruction is planned and explicit. Yet some reading programs, even those used in large school districts, teach this information only if an instructor sees the need.

It is easy to argue that teachers ought to do a better job of keeping up with science, but teaching is already a labor-intensive profession. And it is difficult for the nonspecialist to separate scientific research from the usual flood of quackery and pseudoscience. Peddlers of expensive and supposedly research-based nostrums lobby school districts. Other products that may have scientific validity have not yet been thoroughly tested. For example, theories of mathematical learning suggest that linear (but not circular) board games may boost math preparedness in preschoolers, but the idea needs large-scale testing.

How are educators supposed to know which practices to use? An institution that vets research and summarizes it for educators could solve the problem. Medicine provides a precedent. Practicing physicians do not have the time to keep up with the tens of thousands of research articles published annually that might suggest a change in treatment. Instead they rely on reputable summaries of research, published annually, that draw conclusions as to whether the accumulated evidence merits a change in medical practice. Teachers have nothing like these authoritative reviews. They are on their own.

The U.S. Department of Education has, in the past, tried to bring some scientific rigor to teaching. The What Works Clearinghouse, created in 2002 by the DOE's Institute of Education Sciences, evaluates classroom curricula, programs and materials, but its standards of evidence are overly stringent, and teachers play no role in the vetting process. Teachers also play no role in the evaluation, and their participation is crucial. Researchers can evaluate research, but teachers understand education. The purpose of this institution would be to produce information that can be used to shape teaching and learning.

It is also important that insights provided by a clearinghouse come from basic science. Many teachers, for instance, need to be disabused of the notions children have different ?learning styles? and that boys' brains are hardwired to be better at spatial tasks than girls'. This job of bringing accurate scientific information about thinking and learning to teachers might arguably fall to schools of education, states, districts and teachers' professional organizations, but these institutions have shown little interest in the job. A neutral national review board would be the simplest and quickest answer to a problem that is a big obstacle to broad improvement across many schools.

This article was originally published with the title Brain Science in the Classroom.
