Urban Wildlife and Vector Control Officer
(4 month TFT)?
Working on a team and under minimal supervision, you will be responsible for delivering outreach education on wildlife attractant management practices and responding to calls from the public regarding a range of urban wildlife and vector issues. This position will also include patrolling neighborhoods for relevant Bylaw compliance, conducting site inspections and gathering data and advising residents about best practices to avoid attracting wildlife and rodents. Other duties will include research and report writing, on line data entry, assisting with developing a Bear-Human Conflict Management Plan for Coquitlam, conducting presentations to schools and community groups and working at a variety of public outreach events.
This summer position is well-suited to students that are enrolled or have completed post secondary education in Wildlife Management/ Environmental Studies resources. Applicants should have a strong interest in natural resource management and stewardship of public land. You must enjoy working outdoors and be comfortable interacting with the public and making site visits to attend to urban wildlife and pest issues on City lands and private properties.? Some duties are routine and require self-discipline and attention to detail. It is required you possess the following:?
- Excellent public education and public relations skills
- Experience in environmental activities or issues
- Experience in customer service
- Experience in research and writing reports??
- Excellent written/verbal communication
- Experience in data recording/computer data entry
- Demonstrated organizational ability and creativity
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
- Proficient computer ability using MS Excel, MS Access and Word
- Ability and willingness to work effectively outdoors under all weather? conditions
- Candidates must have an acceptable, valid BC driver?s license
Additional assets include:?
- Formal conflict resolution training
- A sound knowledge of wildlife management and vector issues
- Familiarity with bylaws pertaining to solid waste, attractant management and vector control
- Completion of Bear Aware or Wildlife Conflict training
- Familiarity with the Provincial Bear Aware Program and ?Bear Smart? principles
- Familiarity with Coquitlam main arterials and landmarks
- Knowledge of other languages, including Cantonese and/or Mandarin
This position works Monday to Friday and is a 35 hour work week. Position may be required to work evenings and weekends.? A CUPE hourly rate of $20.45 (2011 rates) is offered, plus a % in lieu of benefits, and compressed work week.
