2 police shot outside Italian premier's office
ROME (AP) ? A prosecutor says Italian politicians were the intended target of a gunman who shot and wounded two policemen in a crowded square outside the premier's office in Rome.
The attack Sunday came just as Italy's new government was being sworn in elsewhere in the city. Italy has suffered political deadlock since an inconclusive February election.
Rome Prosecutor Pierfilippo Laviani told reporters he had questioned the alleged assailant, who was taken to a hospital with bruises after being wrestled to the ground.
Laviani says the "desperate" gunman had "lost work, had lost everything." He said the man "wanted to shoot politicians, but given that he couldn't reach any, he shot the Carabinieri" police at the edge of Chigi Square.
Laviani said the man "confessed everything" and didn't appear mentally unbalanced.

Apple revises campus plans, postpones secondary complex to save money
Even with $145 billion in its back pocket, Apple isn't above the odd bit of cost-saving. Following rumors that its new campus was $2 billion over budget, the company has revised its plans for the facility. While the UFO-style HQ is untouched, a secondary complex that was to be built along North Tantau Ave. has been pushed back to phase two -- which means it'll begin construction in 2016, just after people start working in the spaceship.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) ? St. Lucia police say a boat captain and crewman swam for nearly a day before they were rescued after their vessel sank in dangerous seas. Two U.S. tourists aboard the boat had reached land after 14 hours in the water.
Marine Police Sgt. Finley Leonce told The Associated Press Friday that the captain and first mate swam almost 24 hours before they were rescued by a private boat owner. He says the two men were waving their arms and trying to swim to shore.
They are employees of a company called "Reel Irie," which owns the boat that sank during a fishing trip on Sunday. Brother and sister Dan and Kate Suski also survived.

'Redshirting' kindergarteners not as common as reported
Apr. 25, 2013 ? New research findings from the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education and the Stanford School of Education show that "redshirting" in kindergarten -- the practice of delaying for a year a child's entry into kindergarten -- is not happening at the rate previously reported.
In "'Academic Redshirting' in Kindergarten: Prevalence, Patterns, and Implications," published April 16 in the journal Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, study co-authors Daphna Bassok, assistant professor at the Curry School of Education, and Sean F. Reardon of Stanford found that only between 4 percent and 5.5 percent of children have their entry into kindergarten delayed.
Recent articles in popular news outlets and magazines have suggested that redshirting is more popular than it actually is. For instance, a 2008 New York Times article noted 17 percent of kindergartens were 6 years old rather than 5 when they started kindergarten.
"The perception recently has been that redshirting children for kindergarten is an increasingly popular practice, reaching upwards of nearly 20 percent of kindergarteners," Bassok said. "Our research shows that those numbers are way off and in reality we are seeing only about 4 percent of students starting kindergarten a year after they are first eligible."
Bassok noted that redshirting is garnering the attention of policymakers, in addition to education researchers.
The low rates nationwide, however, mask large variations across groups. According to the study, redshirting is extremely unlikely in schools in low-income neighborhoods, but in some high-income communities there are schools where nearly one in four children delay kindergarten entry.
Low-income and minority families are far more likely to indicate concerns about their child's readiness for kindergarten, a major reason to consider redshirting, but rarely delay kindergarten entry. While nearly 6 percent of white children are redshirted, the study found less than 1 percent of black children are; children from higher-income families redshirt almost three times as often as low-income children.
"Delaying kindergarten means finding and paying for another year of child care," Bassok said. "For most low-income families, redshirting is far too expensive."
The authors also find that redshirting is twice as likely to occur among boys than girls. One common explanation for redshirting is that children -- particularly boys -- are not prepared for the increasingly demanding kindergarten environment. However, in their study, Bassok and Reardon find that children who delay kindergarten do not seem to lag physically, socially or cognitively behind other children their age.
"We examined whether the children who delay kindergarten are those who seem to be struggling or immature, as evaluated by their preschool teachers, parents or even direct test scores," Bassok said. "We were surprised that at age 4, kids who end up delaying kindergarten looked just as 'ready' for school as their peers."
The study's findings suggest that redshirting parents are mostly concerned about their child's position relative to the other children in their classes. In communities where redshirting is common, there can be a large gap between the oldest and youngest students in a class. Parents whose children have birthdays close to the cut-off date for enrollment often would rather wait a year to enroll, so their child becomes among the oldest rather than youngest child in the group.
Bassok's current research is looking at whether or not the perception is true that the academic rigor of kindergarten is increasing, which she hopes will add more insight into the practice of redshirting.

Bangladesh factory building collapse kills over 70, injures hundreds
DHAKA (Reuters) - An eight-storey block housing factories and a shopping center collapsed on the outskirts of the Bangladeshi capital on Wednesday, killing more than 70 people and injuring hundreds, a government official said.
Fire fighters and army personnel worked frantically through the morning at the Rana Plaza building in Savar, 30 km (19 miles) outside Dhaka, to rescue people trapped inside.
One fireman told Reuters that about 2,000 people were in the building when the upper floors jolted down on top of each other.
Bangladesh's booming garment industry has been plagued by fires and other accidents for years, despite a drive to improve safety standards. In November last year, 112 workers were killed in a blaze at a factory in an industrial suburb of Dhaka.
"It looks like an earthquake has struck here," said one resident as he looked on at the chaotic scene of smashed concrete and ambulances making their way through the crowds of workers and wailing relatives of those still inside.
"I was at work on the third floor, and then suddenly I heard a deafening sound, but couldn't understand what was happening. I ran and was hit by something on my head," said Sohra Begum a worker at one of the garment factories.
M.M. Niazuddin, the government's health secretary, told Reuters that at least 76 people were confirmed dead. Another official said hundreds were being treated for injuries.
Mohammad Asaduzzaman, in charge of the area's police station, said factory owners appeared to have ignored a warning not to allow their workers into the building after a crack was detected in the block on Tuesday.
Buildings in the crowded city of Dhaka are sometimes erected without permission and many do not comply with construction regulations. Dozens died when a garment factory collapsed in the same area eight years ago.

Now sit back, relax, close your eyes, and chant: "Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
Isn't that essentially the same thing I stated in my last sentence. Or are you too much of a sniveling retard to read past one sentence?
I'm a deist. I believe in a God, it's just not that genocidal canaanite holdover from the Bible.
I'd guess I fall somewhere into that category too.
Try deism; it's the best of both worlds plus it isn't, you know, actively disproven at every term.
Sorry, but that's no different to many atheist's. Allah, (the Christian)God, Zeus, etc. Most atheists seem to be equally offended by anything they can't see or measure with the current level of technology.
Awww, the poor widdle Abrahamic theist has his feewings hurt? There there...the big bad atheist won't hurt you. He doesn't even notice you.
I'm not even sure what the hell you are trying to say. This is why I generally don't respond to an AC.

Bringing Creativity to Public Education: Standing Behind Children and Teachers
As the U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments on gay marriage, Yahoo asked readers and contributors to share what one cultural issue absorbs their interest. Here's one perspective.
COMMENTARY | Standardized testing is taking our children and our teachers hostage. A teacher in Ohio's public schools myself, I was recently told by an administrator: "Sure, creative projects are nice, but the reality is we need to prepare kids for the test."
Translation: You need to do more worksheets, more practice bubbletrons with your students. Creativity doesn't count here.
However, in real reality, creativity solves problems much bigger than "choose the best answer."
Intelligent, out-of-the-box thinking students regularly tell me how stupid they feel because they can't "figure out" what the test wants from them.
It breaks my heart when my daughter -- a fun-loving, passionate animal lover -- cries after school because her 2nd grade teacher spent 2 hours on Math test prep at school and now she has another 45 minutes of homework.
The biggest social concern of our age is to take the school-as-prison mentality and turn it into school as-invention-studio. We start by training teachers in alternative practices such as Waldorf, Montessori, and Reggio Emilia. Then, like Ohio's Cincinnati Public Schools, we bring these alternative practices into the public sphere.
As parents, we have to stand beside our teachers and say to our legislators and administration: no more testing, no more industrialization of education. Bring creativity and love of learning out of the privilege of private schools and into the public school realm where everyone has access.
Finland has it right. Creativity for teachers and students counts -- it's about educating for life, not for a test.

U.S. sues Novartis over alleged fraudulent kickbacks
(Reuters) - Novartis AG was sued on Tuesday by the United States, which accused the Swiss drug maker of using kickbacks to induce pharmacies to steer thousands of patients to its drug Myfortic, which is used for people who have undergone kidney transplants.
U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara in Manhattan said Novartis disguised the kickbacks as rebates and discounts, in a scheme that caused Medicare and Medicaid to issue tens of millions of dollars of reimbursements based on false, tainted claims.
"Novartis co-opted the independence of certain pharmacists and turned them into salespeople," Bharara said in a statement.
The lawsuit seeks civil penalties and triple damages from Novartis for violating the federal False Claims Act. Bharara also said Novartis is a "repeat offender," having settled fraud charges linked to kickbacks fewer than three years ago.
A Novartis spokeswoman had no immediate comment.

NY suspects asked for hard drives to hold evidence
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) -- The government's evidence in a political corruption case ? audio and video recordings, text messages, emails and more ? is so voluminous that each of the six defendants is being asked to provide a 150-gigabyte hard drive to hold it.
The hard drives will be used to share the evidence with defense lawyers, federal prosecutor Alvin Bragg said in court Tuesday.
He spoke during a scheduling conference after the defendants, including state Sen. Malcolm Smith, pleaded not guilty at their arraignment. They're accused of bribery schemes, including a plan to buy Smith the Republican line on New York City's mayoral ballot.
None of the defendants spoke at either court session; their pleas were entered through their lawyers. Judge Kenneth Karas gave the lawyers until July 19 to study the evidence and consider any motions they might want to make. He allowed the defendants to remain free on bail.
The complaint and indictment make clear that much of the evidence will come from recordings made by an undercover FBI agent and a cooperating witness.
Between 150 and 200 hours of video would fit on 150 gigabytes of storage space.
Smith is accused of scheming with New York City Councilman Daniel Halloran, a Republican, to bribe county Republican leaders for the GOP line on this year's mayoral ballot.
Because he is a Democrat, Smith would have needed three leaders' permission.
The indictment said two Republican Party leaders, Joseph Savino of the Bronx, and Vincent Tabone of Queens, accepted tens of thousands of dollars in exchange for their agreement.
Halloran is also accused of agreeing to steer City Council funds to a company in exchange for more bribes.
The indictment quotes him as saying, "That's politics; it's all about how much. Not about whether or will, it's about how much, and that's our politicians in New York, they're all like that."
In a separate bribery scheme, Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin and Deputy Mayor Joseph Desmaret are accused of taking money and property to approve a real estate project.
Each defendant could be sentenced to 20 years in prison if convicted.
Prosecutors said more than $100,000 changed hands.
The bribery and extortion charges produced hand-wringing in the city and in Albany, where Smith was removed from his most influential post. And they came amid a growing perception that corruption is a serious problem in New York.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced several anti-corruption proposals and U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, who announced the charges three weeks ago, said Monday that he has met with the FBI "to discuss expanding our corruption efforts."
"It seems that a culture of corruption has developed and grown, just like barnacles on a boat bottom," Bharara said. "And just as with barnacles on a boat bottom, when a growth is permitted to spread and grow unchecked, it unsurprisingly takes an unrelenting, collective effort to clean up."
A Quinnipiac University poll released last week found that 48 percent of New Yorkers see corruption as "very serious," the highest share since the poll began asking the question in 2003. And a Siena College poll released Monday showed 81 percent of New York voters expect more corruption arrests.
Neither the undercover agent nor the witness is identified by name in the indictment, but the witness has been widely reported to be Moses Stern, a Rockland County real estate developer. Prosecutors acknowledge that the witness pleaded guilty to unspecified federal charges last month, hoping to win leniency at sentencing.
Desmaret's attorney, Kenneth Gribetz, said Monday he is eager to see the details of that plea bargain.

Mac sales down slightly, but PC sales down much more
There wasn't great news for Mac enthusiasts in Apple's latest quarterly earnings report - Mac sales are actually down year over year. Apple sold 3.952 million Macs this past quarter, compared to 4.017 million for the same quarter a year ago.
Putting a positive spin on the news, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer noted during the conference call with analysts that while Mac sales are down 2 percent year over year, the rest of the PC industry is faring worse - sales are down 14 percent year over year, according to a report from IDC.
Even though unit sales are down, revenue is up - Apple raked in $5.447 billion in Mac sales for the quarter, compared to $5.073 for the same quarter a year ago. So while Apple may not have sold as many Macs, it made more money on them. Tim Cook attributes the difference to strong demand in iMac sales; no surprise, given that the supply of new, thin iMac models was constrained until the beginning of the year.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? If at first you don't succeed, wipe the slobber off and try again.
Just ask 4-year-old pup Huckleberry, who was crowned Monday as this year's "Beautiful Bulldog."
Huckleberry competed for the title in 2010, only to walk away empty-pawed. That changed this year, when he strutted down a blue runway at Drake University in Des Moines dressed in a beige suit as the main character from the movie "Forrest Gump."
"He's just a lover," said his owner, Stephanie Hein, as Huckleberry sat next to his miniature basketball toy and a suitcase similar to one owned by Forrest Gump.
The contest is now in its 34th year and is held ahead of the annual Drake Relays track and field meet. The university's mascot is a bulldog, and each year's winner becomes the mascot for the relays event.
Huckleberry beat 46 other bulldogs to don the crown and cape, and competition was stiff. There was a bulldog dressed as a "Thing" character by Dr. Seuss, another wore an eye patch and fake hoop earring to match his pirate-dressed owner. Diva, donning a tutu, took home the prize for best dressed.
Huckleberry seemed unfazed by all the attention, more interested in a dog-friendly cake that's served annually from the gold-painted throne. He threw in a few slobbered kisses to his owners.
When not competing, Huckleberry likes to cuddle and hang out with a girlfriend bulldog who lives nearby, according to Hein and her husband, Steven.
Huckleberry wore a Mohawk when he initially competed in 2010. But Stephanie Hein spent weeks shrinking and sowing together this year's outfit, which included a blue-checkered T-Shirt similar to the one worn by Forrest Gump.
"He was just a puppy then," she said of his first attempt. "But he's certainly grown into himself now."

'Eye gestures' spotted in Google Glass app code, hints at wink-based photography
While perusing the code for Google Glass's companion Android app, Reddit user Fodawim chanced across several lines of code that could be offer up some interesting navigation options for your Glass. Titled 'eye gestures,' it looks like the wearable's built-in sensors should be able to detect eye activity and integrate that into device input. Two lines of code mention enabling and disabling eye gestures, suggesting it'll be an optional feature, while other lines hint that it would have to be calibrated to your wink before use. Get your well-timed slow-wink at the ready, however, as the final line spotted suggests that a wink gesture can command the 5-megapixel camera to capture whatever you're looking at. Google was already granted a patent for unlocking a screen using eye-tracking information, although wink-based commands sounds a shade easier to deal with -- as long as it doesn't think we're blinking.

It evolves into Sandslash starting at level 22.
Sandshrew is a tailed, bipedal, ground-dwelling pholidote notable for its defensive capabilities. Its body is mostly covered in a dry, tough hide, which is colored to blend in with the sands of the desert. It has two sharp claws on each foot and has three small but sharp claws on its paws, which are also useful for burrowing and can sometimes be poisonous. It can curl into a tight ball about the same size as a basketball to protect its soft underbelly.
Sandshrew's special abilities are extremely limited compared to other Pokmon. It has a greater control over the ground and sand than the average Pokmon, mostly derived from adaptation to its habitat.
In the wild, Sandshrew are mostly defensive by nature. They spend much of their time hidden underground in their burrows and will kick up sand or instantly roll into a ball to escape predators. They may venture out to hunt, taking advantage of the desert sands to hide themselves.
However, with the help of a Trainer, a Sandshrew can become bolder and much more daring, and can even be trained to swim despite the fact that the water weakens them. They are still fond of curling up, though, even if not for defense. Although Sandshrew are usually bipedal, they are able to run on all fours.
Disliking water, Sandshrew are adapted to dry, arid areas. Thus, they can be commonly found in deserts and grasslands, and sometimes in river valleys or the upper levels of caves as well. For the cave varieties, they also dry up if exposed to concentrated doses of light, particularly lights strung together in the cave. Wherever they are, they live underground in deep burrows. It can be found in Kanto, Johto and Hoenn, but it is hardy enough to survive in Orre and can occasionally be found in Sinnoh as well.
Sandshrew do not require a lot of water, due to a very efficient system of staying hydrated with minimal moisture. They hunt for prey in the wild.
Sandshrew was first featured in The Path to the Pokmon League. It was owned by a Pokmon Trainer named A.J.. Despite A.J.'s seemly barbaric training methods (e.g. using a whip, training in a pool), it was very loyal to him.

Sandshrew is based on the pangolin, a mammal that curls up into a ball, has sharp claws, and lives in desert regions. Both Sandshrew and Sandslash are mentioned to have poisonous claws, similar to how some species of the shrew are poisonous. Sandshrew also closely resembles an armadillo.
Sandshrew is a combination of sand and shrew (a small rodent-like mammal).
Wailmer (Japanese: Hoeruko) is a Water-type Pokmon.
It evolves into Wailord starting at level 40.
Wailmer resembles a large spherical whale with no tail. It has a dark blue topside and a tan underbelly with groves. It has two fins that have finger-like appendages, baleen plates that resemble teeth, and a blowhole on the top of its head.
Wailmer can fill itself with water and turn itself into a bouncy ball. The more water it sucks in, the bouncier it becomes.
They are known to be very playful Pokmon. It loves to startle people by forcefully snorting out seawater it stores inside its body out of its nostrils, but it may become lethargic if it becomes dry.
They live in the ocean, but occasionally can bounce onto the shoreline.
They eat over a ton of food a day, which they filter with their baleen plates.
A Wailmer was befriended by Robin, a man who was living on an uncharted island, in Island Time. The Ball Whale Pokmon evolved into a Wailord in order to transport Robin, Ash and his friends to a ship heading to Ever Grande City, though Robin later decided that he wanted to go back to the island.
In Leading a Stray!, Ash assisted a Wailmer that was trapped in the sewers in rejoining its friends in the ocean. It later evolved into a Wailord in the same episode.
Wailmer's first appearance was a cameo in Pikachu's PikaBoo.
Ross used a Wailmer for the Tour de Alto Mare, a water chariot race, in Pokmon Heroes. Ross and Wailmer came in second while Misty and her Corsola came in first.
Wailmer's first anime appearance was in Johto Photo Finish.
Several Wailmer were swimming in the ocean in Hoenn Alone!.
A Wailmer appeared in the opening of Destiny Deoxys.
Several Wailmer also appeared in Clamperl of Wisdom.
Wailmer made a cameo in The Great Eight Fate for Juan's Sootopolis City performance.
Multiple Wailmer also appeared www.monstermmorpg.com/Dragon-Pokemon in Pokmon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea.
A Wailmer belonging to fake pokemon Pandamic a Coordinator appeared in Pruning a Passel of Pals!, taking part in the Wallace Cup.
Multiple Wailmer made a brief cameo in Giratina and the Sky Warrior.
A Wailmer is used by one of the students of Pokmon Summer Academy in the second leg of the Pokmon Triathlon in One Team, Two Team, Red Team, Blue Team!
In Pokmon Adventures, Mr. Briney catches three Wailmer while fishing during his debut round.
Wailmer is based on a stereotypical baleen whale with aspects of a beach ball, similarly to Azumarill.
Wailmer may be a combination of whale and mer (French for sea). Wail may also refer to the sounds or songs that whales and this Pokmon might make.
Hoeruko literally means (bellowing child), but hoeru (bellow) is phonetically similar to whale, making it also possibly mean whale child.
Ninetales (Japanese: Kyukon) is a Fire-type Pokmon.
It evolves from Vulpix when exposed to a Fire play with fake pokemon Glaucea Stone.
This fox-like, quadruped Pokmon is covered with a thick, luxurious golden-white fur, as well as having nine tails, each of which is tipped with orange. They also have a fluffy crest atop their heads and a similar ruff around their necks. Ninetales have gleaming red eyes that are said to give them the power of mind control. They can also live up to one thousand years.
Ninetales are based on the kitsune of Japanese mythology, giving them abilities to Dirt Bike Game wield Ghost-type attacks such as Confuse Ray, and the fairly Ghost exclusive Will-O-Wisp. They are also very vengeful Pokmon and have been known to curse those who mistreat them. Ninetales are highly intelligent Pokmon that understand human speech. Many legends surround this Pokmon, one of which states that Ninetales was born when nine saints were united and reincarnated as this Pokmon. Ninetales have also been shown on several occasions to be able to swim, most notably in Mewtwo Returns and The Power Of One, which is unusual for most Fire types.
This Pokmon's extreme intelligence lends to what most consider Psychic-type characteristics, though Ninetales has never officially been described as anything other than a Fire-type. It also seems to hold grudges very easily and will curse humans and Pokmon alike if they touch one of its tails.
Like its pre-evolution, Ninetales can be found in grassy plains, near active volcanoes, or in shaded mountainous areas, as well as urban areas such as parks and in avenues, more commonly at night. They are also found in areas associated with death, such as Mt. Pyre.
In Beauty and the Breeder, a friend of Suzy named Zane had a Ninetales and used it in a Pokmon breeding contest.
In Just Waiting On A Friend, a very old Ninetales befriended Brock, who bore a resemblance to her long lost master. This Ninetales created all sorts of illusions, including one of a woman through which it spoke.
Ninetales was first seen in Electric Soldier Porygon.
Ninetales made its dub debut in The Battling Eevee Brothers.
The Cinnabar Island Gym Leader, Blaine, used a Ninetales against Ash in their first Gym battle in Riddle Me This. It reappeared in a flashback in Volcanic Panic.
In Mewtwo Strikes Back, a Ninetales owned by Neesha was one of the Pokmon that were captured and cloned by Mewtwo. The Ninetales clone is seen again in Mewtwo Returns.
A Ninetales made a cameo appearance in Misty Meets Her Match. This Ninetales belonged to Rudy.
Ninetales also appeared in The Power of One.
An injured Ninetales appeared under the care of Katrina in A Bite to Remember.
A Ninetales appeared in All Things Bright and Beautifly! under the ownership of a Pokmon Coordinator.
Multiple Ninetales appeared in the opening of Destiny Deoxys.
Ninetales also had a cameo during the opening credits of Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, taking part in the festival honoring Sir Aaron. Also, one appeared in the opening of the movie.
A Ninetales appeared in a flashback in Mutiny in the Bounty! as one of J's captured Pokmon.
In Pokmon Adventures, a Ninetales was captured by Blue, where he uses it in his Gym.
Marge has Ninetales that evolved from a Vulpix.
In Pokmon Mystery Dungeon: Ginji's Rescue Team, the Curse of Ninetales is the reason why main character Ginji was transformed into a Torchic.
Koga sent out Ninetales to participate in the No. 1 Pokmon Contest in Aim to be the No. 1 Little Girl Games Pokmon!.
Blaine's Ninetales was seen in the Cinnabar Gym when Satoshi enters it.
Enta's Vulpix evolved into Ninetales in the final chapter.
Ninetales, like Vulpix, is based on a fox. However, in Japan there are certain legends concerning foxes, or kitsune, as they are known there. One such legend which relates to Ninetales the most is how many-tailed foxes can breathe fire, create illusions, and have extremely long lifespans. After living a long time, these creatures take on spirit forms, which may be the reason why these two related Pokmon can learn Ghost-type moves. In particular, Ninetales is based on the , the nine-tailed fox, which is a fox of advanced age whose fur has turned silver-gold. It is said to have the power of infinite vision.
Ninetales is a combination of nine and tales, which is either a corruption of tails or refers to Ninetales's origin as a Japanese myth. It also could possibly be a reference to the cat o' nine tails whip, which was historically used in military punishments.
Kyukon is a combination of ky (nine) and kon (grudge), which refers to the curse that Vulpix and Ninetales may cast on their foes. This is also reflected in Vulpix, which learns Grudge. Alternatively, it can be read as (old grudge). Kon may also refer to the Japanese onomatopoeia kon kon, which is the sound that foxes make. Furthermore, a konro is a gas burner stove. Also, an alternate reading of the Japanese word for fox, kitsune, is ko.

FILE - In this Friday, March 8, 2013 file photo, actress Reese Witherspoon and her husband, Jim Toth, watch the Toronto Raptors take on the Los Angeles Lakers in an NBA basketball game in Los Angeles. Police in Georgia say that Witherspoon has been arrested on a disorderly conduct charge after a traffic stop involving her husband in Atlanta. A Georgia State Police incident report says that Witherspoon was arrested early Friday, April 19, 2013, and charged with disorderly conduct. The report says a state trooper observed that a car driven by Toth was failing to stay in its lane. The officer writes that Witherspoon disobeyed multiple orders to stay in the car while he performed a field sobriety test on Toth. After she refused to return to the car, she was handcuffed and arrested. (AP Photo/Reed Saxon, File)
ATLANTA (AP) ? Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge after a state trooper said she wouldn't stay in the car while her husband was given a field sobriety test in Atlanta.
Witherspoon was released from jail after the Friday morning arrest and was in New York Sunday night for the premiere of her new film "Mud." She posed for cameras on the red carpet but did not stop to talk to reporters.
The trooper noticed the car driven by her husband wasn't staying in its lane early Friday morning, so a traffic stop was initiated. Her husband, James Toth, had droopy eyelids, watery, bloodshot eyes, and his breath smelled strongly of alcohol, according to the report.
Toth told the trooper he'd had a drink, which Witherspoon said was consumed at a restaurant two hours before the traffic stop, the trooper writes.
Before the field sobriety test began, the 37-year-old Witherspoon got out of the car, was told to get back in and obeyed, the report said. After the "Walk the Line" star got out a second time, the trooper said he warned her that she would be arrested if she left the car again.
As the test continued, "Mrs. Witherspoon began to hang out the window and say that she did not believe that I was a real police officer. I told Mrs. Witherspoon to sit on her butt and be quiet," Trooper First Class J. Pyland writes.
Toth, 42, was then placed under arrest. He was charged with driving under the influence and failure to maintain the lane.
At that point, the report says, Witherspoon got out and asked the trooper what was going on. After being told to return to the car, she "stated that she was a 'US Citizen' and that she was allowed to 'stand on American ground,'" the report states.
The trooper then began to arrest Witherspoon. The report says Witherspoon was resistant at first but was calmed down by her husband.
"Do you know my name?" Witherspoon is quoted as asking the trooper. She also said: "You're about to find out who I am" and "You're about to be on national news," according to the report.
Toth and Witherspoon were then taken to jail.
A message left at the office of Witherspoon's publicist, Meredith O'Sullivan Wasson, wasn't immediately returned Sunday.
News of the arrest broke shortly before Witherspoon arrived on the "Mud" red carpet.
"I can't say anything because I don't know," said director Jeff Nichols. " I literally ? the first guy on the press line to say something was the first time I heard about it so I gotta go figure it out."
Matthew McConaughey, who plays the lead role in "Mud" and is represented by Toth, said "I'm not going to comment on that because it's too fresh."

Genetics defines a distinct liver disease
Apr. 21, 2013 ? Large-scale genetic study defines relationship between primary sclerosing cholangitis and other autoimmune diseases.
Researchers have newly associated nine genetic regions with a rare autoimmune disease of the liver known as primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). This brings the total number of genetic regions associated with the disease to 16.
Approximately 70 per cent of people who suffer from PSC also suffer from IBD. The team showed that only half of the newly associated genetic regions were shared with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). For the first time, this definitively proves that PSC, although genetically related to IBD, is a distinct disease.
PSC is a chronic, progressive disease of the bile ducts that channels bile from the liver into the intestines. It can cause inflammation of the bile ducts (cholangitis) and liver scarring that leads to liver cirrhosis and liver failure. There are no effective treatments available. Although PSC affects only one in 10,000 people, it is a leading cause of liver transplant surgery.
?Before our study, it was never quite clear whether PSC was a complication of IBD or a distinct disease in its own right,? says Dr Carl Anderson, lead author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. ?We have proven it to be a unique disease, and hope that our results will inform the development of more effective treatments, designed to target the biological pathways involved in causing the disease?.
The work involved an international group of scientists from the International PSC study group recruiting patients from 13 countries within Europe and North America. Without this large collaborative effort it would not have been possible to obtain the large number of patient DNA samples necessary for the study.
The team used DNA genotyping technology to survey more thoroughly regions of the genome known to underlie other immune-related diseases to discover if they also play a role in PSC susceptibility.
In addition to the nine genetic regions newly associated, they also saw strong signals at three regions of the genome previously associated with the disease. Of these twelve genetic regions, six are also associated with IBD, while the six other regions showed little to no association in a recent large study of IBD.
?Using the Immunochip genotyping chip, we can pull apart the genetic relationships between these autoimmune diseases and begin to see not only their genetic similarities, but also the differences,? says Jimmy Liu, PhD student and first author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. ?As PSC is a rare disorder, sample collection is more difficult than for other, more common, autoimmune diseases. We hope that with more samples from patients, we?ll be able to link more genetic regions to the disease, and it will become easier to identify underlying pathways that could act as therapeutic targets.?
Three of the genetic regions associated with PSC fall within a single biological system that underlies variation in T cells, cells important to our immune response. One gene that controls this pathway, HDAC7, is known to be a key factor in immune tolerance and the new data strongly suggests exploring the possibility that drugs affecting HDAC7 function may serve as future therapeutics in PSC.
In an extended analysis, the team identified an additional 33 genetic regions that are also involved in several common immune-mediated conditions (celiac disease, Crohn?s disease, ulcerative colitis, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoidosis and psoriasis). This analysis shows that PSC shares many genetic risk loci with other immune-mediated diseases and opens up the possibility for testing drugs known to be effective in genetically similar diseases for efficacy in PSC.
The next step for the team is to do a high-powered search throughout the entire genomes of PSC patients to find specific regions associated with PSC outside of the regions included on the Immunochip genotyping chip.
?This study has uncovered more about the genetics underlying PSC than any before it, but this is only the first step? says Dr Tom Hemming Karlsen, lead author from Oslo University Hospital, Norway. ?We hope the ongoing scientific and clinical research being conducted through the International PSC study group will help improve the outlook for those currently suffering at the hands of this disease?
?Our study, which is the largest of its type for PSC, would not have been possible without the help of the patients with this rare disorder,? adds Dr Hemming Karlsen.
