SOFTWARE HOUSE Microsoft isn't happy about Facebook Home, as it laid into the custom Android skin in a scathing blog post on Friday.
Facebook announced Home at an event in California on Thursday?as a custom Android overlay that brings people, rather than apps, to the forefront of the smartphone. Although the skin is nothing like Microsoft's People Hub app, the Redmond firm seems to think otherwise and has attacked Facebook in a blog post rant.
The rant was posted by the brilliantly named Frank X. Shaw, Microsoft's corporate VP of communications. He watched Facebook's announcement on Thursday and he didn't like it. Not one bit.
"I tuned into the coverage of the Facebook Home event yesterday and actually had to check my calendar a few times - not to see if it was still April Fools Day, but to see if it was somehow still 2011," Shaw said.
Why did he think it was still 2011? Because Facebook ripped off Microsoft's 'People Hub' launch event from that exact year, apparently. We've watched a clip of the press conference, and we think it's fair to say that Shaw is exaggerating a little. Well, a lot.?
Shaw hasn't finished his rant yet. Not by a long shot. He goes on to moan about how Facebook has ripped off Microsoft's 'idea' of delivering one threaded conversation for SMS and Facebook Messaging, and its 'idea' of checking in to locations by tapping on a picture of your face. As you can see, he's really thought about this - although we're not sure that's been time well spent.
Shaw continues, "Millions of Windows Phone owners have already discovered how great a phone can be when it's designed this way, and they aren't shy about telling their friends. Naturally, some of those friends have been pretty frustrated that they haven't been able to get a 'People First' experience on their devices.
"So, we understand why Facebook would want to find a way to bring similar functionality to a platform that is sadly lacking it.
"But as Android owners know, that platform is complicated enough without adding another skin built around another metaphor, on top of what is already a custom variant of the OS." ?
