The American Captivity of Bob McCoskrie: The Regnerus Study

Predictably, Family First ?New Zealand? is now parrotting the prescripted lines of the US Christian Right?s ?Family Research Council? and its ?Senior Policy Analyst? Peter Sprigg, who has stated that he wants to recriminalise male homosexuality and supports exgay ?reparative therapy.?? Again, however, it is not LGBT activists who are the primary detractors of the Regnerus study, but Regnerus? own professional peers, drawing on cumulative evidence-based research expertise.

Regnerus himself is a conservative Catholic and holds three sociology degrees from Tennessee Christian College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As the Media Matters website notes, the Regnerus study has been primarily faulted on five criteria- (1) it does not compare lesbian/gay parents in durable relationships to straight married parents; (2) it lumps in subpopulations- divorced parents, stepfamilies and single parent families- to maximise its heterogeneous catchment of ?lesbian mothers and gay fathers.? (3) it does not establish any causative relationship between same-sex parenting and negative outcomes; (4) it has no operational definition for lesbian mothers and gay fathers (5) as noted, the antigay Witherspoon Institute was a primary funder of the initial stages of the Regnerus study.

Incidentally, as Sprigg himself only has a fundamentalist divinity qualification, what enables him to comment objectively on such matters?
