MANAGUA, Dec. 20 ? Nicaraguan-born Everth Cabrera, who plays for U.S. major league team San Diego Padres, has been named his country?s Professional Athlete of 2012, a sports media source said Thursday.
?Cabrera is being acknowledged for winning the title in U.S. mayor league baseball this year,? said Moises Avalos, President of Nicaragua? s Sports Writers Association (ACDN).
According to the ACDN, Cabrera stole base 44 times, repeating his high score from 2009, and had an annual batting average of .246 in 115 games.
In an inverview with Xinhua, Avalos said the 2012 Amateur Athlete award went to boxer Osmar Bravo, for his indisputable victory in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Bravo also won a bronze medal at the Rio de Janeiro Pan-American Championships, and a gold medal in Costa Rica?s Central American Tournament.
?2012 Child Athlete went to wrestler Johnny Vargas, 15, who won gold medals at the Scolastic Pan-American Games held in Guatemala,? said Avalos.
Vargas also did well at the recent scholastic games of the Central American Isthmus Sports and Recreation Council (Codicader).
The ACDN annual awards also named baseball the 2012 Sport of the Year.
Marlon Torres, director of the Nicaraguan Sports Institute, was elected 2012 Sport Leader.
