When Audi more or less shelved the R8 e-tron electric-powertrain supercar last year, the sound of green car and high-performance supercar fans? breaking hearts could be heard around the auto enthusiast world.

But according to a December 2012 article on Automobile?s Web site, Audi may have not yet signaled the death knell of an alternative fuel supercar.

The magazine writes that Audi?s R&D chief Wolfgang D?rheimer has expressed ambitions for a new supercar, currently called the R20 project. And more recently Motor Trend has reported additional confirmation of the R20 after speaking with D?rheimer this week during the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

According to the Automobile D?rheimer wants a car on the order of a street-legal LeMans racer. Furthermore, the anticipated powertrain for the R20 is some type of diesel-hybrid in the form of a twin-turbo V6 engine.

The magazine says that the car might make as much as 550 hp.

Audi plans to equip the R20 with the trademark full-length tailfin of an R18 LeMans racer according to the magazine. Other design features are said to include a downsized, singleframe grille, stacked LED headlights, ventilated front and rear wings, an adjustable tail spoiler (which may double as an air brake), and a relatively narrow canopy-style cockpit accessed through gullwing doors.

A crucial design element, says Automobile, is the active aerodynamics system, which can distribute the downforce between the front and rear axles for optimum stability in the critical 100-200 mph range.

Look for the R20 at the Pebble Beach Concours d?Elegance auto show in 2015.
